Can you backpack and do harvest work around Australia without your own car?

I have a license, but can't afford a car right now. Not even a clunker. I'm an Australian citizen so don't need to worry about visas, airfares and all that... I'm unemployed though and sick of it. Will I be able to get by without my own car, or be severely disadvantaged?
