Does/did your church ever ask anything of you that made you feel uncomfortable?

The church I went to as a child was constantly making us do things that made me feel silly or embared. For instance, the very first time I went to that church, they asked if anyone was new and after the family I went there with made me raise my hand, the pastor made me stand up in front of a congregation of over 1,000 people and introduce my 8-year-old self. Then, when it came time to go to church camp, they made me become a member of the church before they would let me go to camp, even though I was going to pay to go just like everyone else. Also, they spent years haring me to get baptized, to the point that I finally just lied and said I had already done it at my grandma's church. Why did this church feel it was necessary to constantly make me feel as though I did not fit in? Is it common for churches to treat people this way, even children?
